General Discussion / I'm alive
« on: October 28, 2017, 05:15:46 pm »
For those that might think I am AWOL again... I am not...

Work has made it that I need to be running a Linux environment again 24x7, and as you all know, Linux is sucky for games. So over the past several weeks I have been working on a solution. I am almost ready to re-join the games with everyone!

What I did was...

1) Move my video card into the 2nd PCIx16 slot on my motherboard.
2) Installed an older video card into the 1st slot and plugged all my screens into it
3) Setup a Windows virtual machine using KVM on Linux
4) Gave the VM my now secondary card to use directly (so it now has access to the physical GPU)
5) Wrote a windows driver for Red Hat so it could be signed by them for use in windows virtual machines.
6) Wrote a client/server program that allows me to stream the VM back to the host (using the above driver) as now it want's to output video to the physical monitor outputs, which has nothing on them.
6) Discovered a bug in the KVM system on linux, debugged, fixed and published it.
7) Ended up in the news....

So now I am at working on the final of this, making the client application reliable. As soon as Red Hat build and release the driver I wrote for them I will be able to join you all. Most games do not like Windows in the 'Test Signing' mode which is used for running unsigned (aka, custom) drivers as it can be used for cheating.

Announcements / TS3 Outage
« on: October 06, 2017, 11:09:29 am »
Sorry for the Teamspeak outage, it is back online now. The server that it is running on was upgraded which broke the scripts that start up the server each boot which went unnoticed.

Announcements / [COMPLETED] Forum and TS3 Disruption
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:23:07 pm »
This is just an announcement to let everyone know that there will be a short forum and TS3 disruption as I am moving this server to a new platform. I hope to get this done over the next few days depending on my workload.

If you are using the IP address for TS3 (which you shouldn't be anyway) you won't be able to get back in, please be sure you are using the hostname '' to avoid this.

This will not affect the game servers.

Yes, it's that time again. I will be performing server updates to the hosts running this website and the team speak server, I apologize in advance for any interruptions in services, they should be minimal and only last a few minutes at most.

Announcements / HTTP Server Upgraded
« on: July 09, 2016, 08:22:50 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would let you all know that the LRRP forums are now fully encrypted using SSL for security of user accounts. The server now also supports HTTP/2 which will improve the general performance of the site.

See attached for a laugh!

For those that might be worried, this is all on a local test server, this development work will not affect the public LiF server.

Announcements / Game servers discontinued until further notice
« on: May 23, 2016, 11:32:37 am »
As some of you are already aware, due to the cost of keeping servers online and changes in my personal life, I no longer can afford to maintain the minecraft or ARK server hosting costs. But this is not all bad news, where I live is finally getting upgraded for internet connectivity which means I will have enough bandwidth to host the game servers from my local network. The ETA on network completion is projected for mid August, so until then the servers are now officially offline.

Note: I have taken complete backups of the servers and when brought back online the worlds in minecraft and ARK will remain.

« on: December 24, 2014, 08:03:53 am »
The data center has suspended our server because of insufficient funds in the LRRP account, up till now I have been paying for the server, but we need donations people, I can not maintain this by myself. Please, if we all give a little we can cover the cost of $60USD per month.

DayZ / ArmA2 + Steam = Fail
« on: July 26, 2014, 07:04:07 pm »
This information is hard to find and trawling the forums for hours I discovered what has occurred.

GameSpy is the service that ArmA2 uses to publish the server for players to find, when you load the server list in game, via DayZ Commander, or PlayWithSix it uses GameSpy's service to load the server list. The problem is that GameSpy is closing down.

Versions of ARMA2:OA later then 1.63.112555 require steam to run as it now uses Valve's server service instead of GameSpy. When GameSpy shut down, searching for servers will break, and the community will be forced onto the new version anyway.

Pros of Steam Integration:
  * The player UID is changing from BI's own thing, to a proper SteamID, this will make it impossible for players to change their UID to get around bans/restrictions, etc.
  * The server brower in steam is very fast & nice.

  * BI have not back ported the new steam code into the older STABLE versions of Arma2:OA, which means that they are forcing everyone onto their buggy beta version, and calling it "stable".
  * Because of the playerUID change BattlEye will stop working unless the server is updated.
  * Because the playerUID changes, everyone will be fresh spawns on Epoch unless I write some special trickery.
  * Servers have to update, and anyone using it under Wine (like us) will be officially screwed (I am building a new version of wine as an attempt to work around this, but not holding my breath).

What does this mean for our servers...

If I cant get wine working again, we will have to revert to a windows server again (BOO). This will make the job of maintaining the server a huge PITA again and may also drive the cost up from free to paying a monthly for a windows license (I will talk to the DC regarding this issue).
